Symphony girls

The SCCYO orchestra strives to achieve the highest standards in musical quality while providing a positive, learning experience for serious students desiring to improve their musical skill.   We welcome music students of all skill levels to audition.  The SCCYO is a perfect complement to those who are currently taking private lessons or who are in their school orchestras, looking for additional performance experience.

Symphony Orchestra was selected to perform at MMEA in Tan-Tar-A in 2016

Mid season auditions will be held on January 6th & 13th 2018. We have openings for all levels of strings, wind, brass and percussion. Please see below for requirements.

Placement

A brief audition determines proper placement of musicians in the various ensembles. Factors that determine placement are:

• Performance quality
• Musical ability
• Tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, posture and leadership
• Qualities past and present.
• Sight reading
• Previous experience
• School grade and age

Current members must re-audition annually to allow for seating placement and promotion to a different group. Seating auditions are held annually in August  (see calendar). New members may also audition at this time. Students must audition with the instrument on which they play in their school music program. This policy is waived when no applicable music program exists. For ensembles that require excerpts, they will be available on the web site in forms and documents ahead of the audition. After the initial placement, the conductor reserves the right to make seating changes throughout the season. Mid season auditions will be held for those students who missed the August date. Students who audition mid season will be placed in an ensemble and will be seated at the back of the section.

Audition Procedure

Annual auditions will be judged by an audition panel of SCCYO music instructors. Students should arrive for auditions 15 minutes before the scheduled time in order to tune, warm up, and to acclimate the instrument to the environment. When you arrive at the audition:

1. Check in at the reception desk. The coordinator will direct you to a practice room to warm up and tune your instrument. You will be called when it is you turn. Please give a copy of your solo piece to the judge.
2. The student may be stopped at any time during the audition. The length of the audition does not reflect the quality of the playing, but rather to give each student equal time.
3. Audition results will be mailed to each player.

Scales solos, and excerpts do not need to be memorized
