Michael Dunsmoor, Primo Strings Conductor

Michael Dunsmoor is excited to be a part of the St. Charles County Youth Orchestras and is thrilled to begin his first season as the conductor of the Primo Strings.

Mr. Dunsmoor is currently the orchestra director at Pattonville High School where he directs four orchestras and assists an orchestra class at Holman Middle School.  Under his direction, the high school orchestras have won awards and high ratings in large group festivals and competitions in Boston, MA, New Orleans, LA, and St. Louis, MO.  In 2018 his top performing group will travel to Seattle, WA to compete at yet another festival through World Strides/Heritage.  Before arriving in the Pattonville School District, Mr. Dunsmoor spent his first seven years of teaching in the Webster Groves School District.  His former teaching duties included working with 4th & 5th grade students in an after school strings program, teaching orchestra students in grades 6-8, substitute teaching all instrumental and choir classes, guest conducting on concerts, and co-teaching Webster Groves High School’s Indoor and Symphonic bands.

Apart from teaching, Mr. Dunsmoor is a skilled composer and arranger—his compositions, orchestrations and arrangements have had performances by ensembles from Missouri State University, the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, Community Music School’s Young People's Symphonic Orchestra, Berklee College of Music, Manchester United Methodist Church, and the St. Louis Symphony IN UNISON Chorus.  Dunsmoor’s composition background has allowed him to work as a freelance copyist for several composers, orchestras, area churches, and organizations—including Berklee College of Music’s online music school.  As a performer, he has played with many of the area’s top ensembles on violin, viola, and trombone: St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, Webster University’s Chamber & Symphony Orchestras, University City Symphony Orchestra, Compton Heights Concert Band, St. Louis Low Brass Collective, Matt McCallie Orchestra, and the Gateway City Big Band.  He has also been featured in recordings for worship leaders based out of Austin, TX, Nashville, TN, and St. Louis, MO.

Michael Dunsmoor holds a Bachelor of Music degree in film Scoring from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) and a Master of Arts degree in Instrumental Conducting from Webster University (St. Louis, MO).  As a conductor, Mr. Dunsmoor has had the opportunity to work with some of the St. Louis area’s finest musicians.  His former conducting positions include: Conductor of the Borealis Chamber Players, String Ensemble Director at Missouri Baptist University, Guest Conductor with Webster University’s Chamber & Symphony Orchestras, Pit Director for Musical Productions of West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, and Fiddler on the Roof.
